Seeing one of Enigma Machines, including the rare ‘Abwehr G312′, is undoubtedly a highlight of a busy day out at Bletchley Park, but there is much more than machines in a visit to the historic site. Check out the tales of spies and strategic deception. You may even be the one to discover the map to genius mathematician Alan Turing’s silver, supposedly buried in or near Bletchley Park. There are more than enough different activities and exhibitions to occupy most families for a whole day, from wartime toys to working computers. There’s a wartime mini cinema and an outstanding Churchill collection. Lively exciting events are held on special days throughout the year. Have a look through the ornate Victorian Mansion that was headquarters to intelligence staff during the War. Wander by the Lake, relax and observe the wildlife. Children can let off steam on new playground. And there’s much much more . . .

Charnwood Museum features a wide range of exhibits reflecting the history, geology, archaeology and industries of Charnwood and the surrounding area. Permanent displays include ‘Coming to Charnwood’, ‘The Natural World of Charnwood’, ‘Living off the Land’ and ‘Earning a Living’. Each contains exhibits from the past and present including interactive displays, computers and audio-visuals. Visitors can handle rocks from Charnwood’s volcanic past, walk beneath the giant oak tree, investigate the 4,000 year old burial of the Cossington Boy, visit the Victorian grocers shop or zoom-in on a fly’s eye with the video microscope.

The London Transport Museum based in Covent Garden, London, seeks to conserve and explain the transport heritage of Britain’s capital city. It has undergone a £22 million refurbishment project dramatically improving the Museum’s Victorian Grade II listed building. The museum reopened in November 2007. The new galleries show the development of London and its transport systems, along with giving an insight into the lives of past commuters and transport workers over the past 200 years. It also looks at future transport projects and compares London’s transport to five other major world cities: Delhi, New York, Paris, Shanghai, and Tokyo.

A Grade II* Listed Building, Combe Mill Museum is the original ‘power house’ of the old Blenheim Palace Estate timber mill and workshops. This working industrial museum offers visitors a fascinating insight into work that went on behind the scenes of the Blenheim Estate over the last century or so. Visitors get a feel for the past as they enter this authentic building where they are able to talk with Society members operating the machinery and demonstrating lost skills. The exhibits will be of interest to the whole family and children are catered for too.

Sir John Soane’s Museum is a museum of architecture, and was formerly the house and studio of the neo-classical architect Sir John Soane. It holds many drawings and models of his projects and the collections of paintings, drawings and antiquities that he assembled. Soane was born in 1753, the son of a bricklayer, and died after a long and distinguished career, in 1837. He designed this house to live in, but also as a setting for his antiquities and his works of art.After the death of his wife (1815), he lived here alone, constantly adding to and rearranging his collections. Having been deeply disappointed by the conduct of his two sons, one of whom survived him, he determined to establish the house as a museum to which ‘amateurs and students’ should have access.
