No.22 Sheldonian Theatre

The Sheldonian Theatre was built from 1664 to 1668 after a design by Christopher Wren for the University of Oxford. The building is named after Gilbert Sheldon, chancellor of the university at the time and the project’s main financial backer. It is used for music concerts, lectures and university ceremonies, but not for drama. In 1994 the Theatre was described by the European Commission as “one of the architectural jewels of Oxford”.

In addition to being at the heart of Oxford, and site for matriculation and graduation ceremonies for all Oxford students, this building is known to have the first suspended ceiling. Upon taking the tour, or choosing to go through on your own, you will be directed to climb a series of steps to reach the cupola at the top. Just before reaching the cupola, you will enter an area with large wooden beams that might look something like an attic. as you walk across the floor, you are actually walking across the ceiling of the theater below. On a clear day, the cupola offers a great opportunity to see Oxford in 360 degrees.

Take your camera to the Sheldonian Theatre! Several photos of Oxford taken from the cupola, plus a little Photoshop magic resulted in a memory-aiding panorama of the city. (Buy the inexpensive Cupola guide to help you get oriented after the circular climb to the top.) Once back on the ground look up and take multiple shots of the Robert Streater ceiling artwork to stitch together for another project. The painting dates to 1668-9, and depicts Truth, the Arts, and Sciences teaming up to banish Ignorance from Oxford. While in Oxford, you may also have opportunity to take in a concert or lecture in this beautiful setting.
